Heading west, take the turning on the right for Mare Monte Hotel. Where the road bears to the right for the hotel entrance, continue straight along the dirt track until a small farm is reached. Park your vehicle here and walk towards the shore. On the left, at the edge of the military area are rectangular shaped tanks cut into the rock, these are Roman fish tanks.
The Roman fishermen needed to keep their fish fresh so built the tanks to keep the fish alive before selling. They took advantage of prevailing winds and tides to drive the sea water along the intake channels into the tanks. The easterly oriented channels provided exit passages for the stale, hot sea water. These channels can still be clearly seen. Behind the tanks, hewn from the rock are Roman tombs. |
