There are two churches that cater for the small Christian community.St. Andrews Anglican church situated very close to the Police Station will welcome all denominations and has services every Sunday and on Holy Days.
The Catholic Church of Terra Santa ( the Holy Ground) is in Ersin Sokak opposite the Dome Hotel. Mass is held on the first and third Sundays of the month at 12 noon. This strange church, which at first glance looks Byzantine, is in fact a twentieth century edifice built by two locals who felt that the Catholic minority should have their own church in which to worship. They use stone from old buildings and ruined churches as is evident if the masonry is studied carefully, and they modelled the building on the Greco-Byzantine style.
It is quite understandable that the church could be mistaken for something older except when one looks at the window frames and realises they are very much 1930s modern iron, going rusty. The church grounds are sadly untended and there is a general air of neglect, the Catholic population too few and too widespread to take care of them. |
