Turkish Cypriot leader Talat came together with the head of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss ways to break the Cyprus deadlock.
The Finnish formula prepared for a solution to the Cyprus issue is unbalanced and unfair, and a solution under the auspices of the U.N. is the only way for a comprehensive deal, Talat told reporters in Geneva, following a half an hour meeting with Annan.
Saying that he had had "a fruitful meeting" with Annan, Talat stated that he hoped Turkish and Greek Cypriots would resume full-fledged negotiations in the near future to reach a settlement on the island.
"It is wrong to link Turkey's accession process with the rights of Turkish Cypriots in a comprehensive settlement plan," Talat remarked, in an apparent response to the E.U., which set Dec. 6 as deadline for Turkey to find a solution to the "chronic" Cyprus issue.
Last week, U.N. Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari had sent a letter requesting Turkish and Greek Cypriot leaders resume the stalled Cyprus talks.
Talat said that the letter was not clear on a timetable, which could cause problems for the northern part of the island.
"We want to see actions from both sides that close the gap between words and deeds," Annan had remarked after their meeting.
