The one-off newspaper published by the 'Thank You Europe Committee', in English and Turkish, describes the north of Cyprus as "a forgotten corner of Europe touched by political farce".
Spoof articles in Europa North Cyprus include renaming Ercan (Tymbou) airport as ‘Olli Rehn International Airport’, in reference to EU Enlargement Commissioner and a warning by environmental experts that global warming could further divide Cyprus.
Another describes a bicommunal internet dating site that urges Greeks: "Don’t be a jerk. Marry a Turk" and encourages Turks: "End your seek. Marry a Greek".
The newspaper was put together by a group of around 20 Turkish Cypriot professionals who say it’s really no joke.
They said Turkish Cypriots have been waiting three years for Europe to end their economic isolation under an EU proposal for direct trade.
"It’s a political statement," said a spokesman for the group who did not wish to be identified.
"We are fed up with the EU’s slowness at doing anything about the north. We want to express our disappointment with Europe after making promises and failing to deliver anything at all. We also felt like having some fun."
One thousand copies of the newspaper were sent to the European parliament yesterday. Copies were also given to all diplomatic missions on the island, and 5,000 copies were circulated with Turkish Cypriot newspaper Kibris.
"It’s a message and we hope Europe gets the message and understands it. It’s delivered as a joke but it’s a serious message," said the spokesman.
A short editorial however covers the more serious aim of the project. In it the committee says the newspaper is a reminder that Turkish Cypriots have not forgotten what has been promised.
